Cover fabrics: whatever you like.

When it comes to the cover fabric for your upholstered furniture, we work only with renowned professionals. For instance, we have put together high quality collections of decorative fabrics with the leading fabric house of JAB Anstoetz.

But which fabric is the right one for you? One rugged enough to stand up to the demands of everyday living, day in day out, with easy-care properties, or one chosen more for its appearance and stylishness?

Take a look at the practical tips below. Armed with this knowledge, you will enjoy choosing the right fabric for you.

1. Durability

Did you know that furnishing fabrics are tested for durability according to the Martindale process? This is what happens: the fabric is rubbed with sandpaper under pressure. The number of revolutions (abrasive revolutions) until the first thread break are counted. The higher the number of revolutions, the better. We care about quality. That’s why we only offer you fabrics with a durability of 15,000 abrasive revolutions or higher. For heavy-duty applications we recommend fabrics with a 20,000 revolution rating. Many of our fabrics will withstand even greater stresses.

2. Pilling

The surface of some fabrics, especially flat fabrics, can become roughened in use and develop little knobbles.  This is known as pilling. These pills can be removed with a garment shaver and do not impair the durability of the fabric.

3. Care properties

Do you have young children or pets? Then we recommend a furniture fabric which is easy to care for and easy to clean, such as a washable fabric or one that has been treated with a special stain guard like Teflon.

4. Soiling

The general principle is that muted colours and patterns are less sensitive, whereas light colours attract stains as if by magic. That’s why we recommend regular care and cleaning. And here’s another practical tip: remember that new denim clothing can bleed colour. Jeans marks on your sofa or easy chair not only look unsightly, they are also very hard to remove as a rule.

5. Light fastness

Where will your upholstered furniture be placed? In a conservatory or a room which is always exposed to strong sunlight and bright daylight? Then we recommend you consider decorative shading for your room. Remember that the effects of light can quickly fade furniture fabrics. The light-fastness of fabrics is measured on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 being the best value. A good furniture fabric has a factor of at least 4.

6. Fabric and upholstery

Creases in upholstery fabric are the hinges that permit movement. Whether you choose a looser or a tighter style of upholstery, creasing of the upholstery fabric can cause light and shade effects. Bear that in mind when selecting your fabric.
